Where Is Jomtien? What is it? How Do I Get There?

Jomtien is generally lesser known than its neighbor Pattaya, but that doesn’t mean that it’s any lesser of a place. For those residing in Bangkok, it is a popular weekend destination for its watersports, beaches, and relaxing environment. It is also ideal for those who don’t want to be surrounded by Pattaya’s nightlife but also want access to entertainment and the amenities of a city.

Where is it?
Jomtien is on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand and is situated a mere 3 kilometers south of Pattaya and is 125 kilometers from the Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

What is Jomtien?
Jomtien is a lower key area that generally doesn’t have the busy environment and hectic energy of Pattaya’s entertainment atmosphere. The city features a long beach 6 kilometers in length and tropical temperatures tempered by cool sea breezes. Jomtien also has its own areas for a dining and drinks, but not to the extremes that is often associated with Pattaya.

Jomtien also has its own shopping to offer and the establishments of Jomtien are typically smaller. The smaller shops generally feature items that would be commonly associated with the beach town atmosphere. For the supercenters and malls, Pattaya can satisfy those needs and they are all only only a few kilometers away and reachable by car, motorbike, or taxi.

For most of the week Jomtien is a quiet and relaxed place. On weekends the city of Jomtien, and especially the beach, becomes busier because the area has emerged as a popular weekend vacation spot for Bangkok families seeking an escape from the concrete and congestion of Bangkok.

How Do I Get There?

Bangkok/Airport By Car
From Suvarnabhumi Airport, the area of Jomtien is only about 90 minutes by road. There are two roads available for the drive. Motorway 7 stretches between Bangkok and Jomtien, and it is generally a faster route but entries and exits can become congested during the busy weekends and evening commuters. The other option is Sukhumvit Road/Bang Na-Trat Road that links Bangkok to Chonburi, Pattaya, and Jomtien. The road does not have any tolls but traffic is slower at some points and becomes heavily congested with evening commuters returning to Bangkok.

Bus

Bus services run from Pattaya to Bangkok’s Northern and Eastern Bus Terminals located in Mo Chit (Northern) and Ekkamai (Eastern). From Pattaya there are smaller buses available and run between Jomtien Beach and Pattaya Nuea Bus Terminal.
